12 NDRF teams deployed in Tamil Nadu, six in Andhra Pradesh
More than 4,500 persons rescued in Tamil Nadu
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed 12 teams comprising more than 500 persons along with 45 boats and other flood rescue equipment in Tamil Nadu including at Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Velacherry, Chennai, Basin Bridge and Sriperambadur. NDRF teams rescued more than 4,500 persons and retrieved two dead bodies. Similarly, 6 teams of NDRF along with boats and other flood rescue equipment have been deployed in districts Nellore and Chittoor of Andhra Pradesh. Four more teams have been mobilized for Andhra Pradesh, which are enroute. National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has also mobilized its resources to assist re-opening of Kolkata - Chennai National Highway near Monabolu of Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh.
State Government of Andhra Pradesh has also alerted Army and deployed 2 helicopters for relief and rescue in the State. National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is in constant touch with both the State Governments to provide any assistance as per their requirement.
Under the influence of passing weather systems, heavy to very heavy rainfall occurred, resulting into floods in many parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Necessary advisories were sent to the concerned State Governments informing them of the likely impacts and precautionary measures to be taken. Fishermen were advised not to venture into the sea along and off the coast amongst north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and coastal Andhra Pradesh. The State Governments swiftly mobilized their own response resources as well as requested NDRF teams to assist them in responding to the emerging situation.
