The University Grants Commission (UGC) has reported that it has constituted a Committee to look into the entire gamut of University-Industry linkages. While this will encourage universities to offer consultancy services to industries and assist their Research & Development, it will also promote participation of industries in placements and internships of students.
In its preliminary recommendations the committee has suggested strengthening of partnership and collaboration between universities and industries for mutual benefit. The areas of collaboration identified by the Committee inter alia included co-sponsorship of Ph.D students by Industry.
Universities are autonomous in matters of sponsorship of academic programmes by reputed private companies, subject to observance of minimum standards and other norms for such programmes as laid down by the UGC.
This information was given by the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Smt. Smriti Irani in a written reply to the Lok Sabha question.
