Procurement of Ammunitions from Private Industry
The Government vide press Note No. 4 (2001 Series) opened up the defence industry sector for 100% Indian private sector participation in defence manufacturing including ammunitions subject to licensing. The defence industry sector was opened up for private sector to meet the growing needs of the Armed Forces and to harness the potential of private sector in our endeavour of achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
Several private companies have been issued industrial license by the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) for manufacture of arms and ammunitions.
The procurement of ammunition is an ongoing process which is done on war wastages reserve scale. So far, no decision has been taken to procure a specific type of ammunition from private sector.
This information was given by Minister of State for Defence Rao Inderjit Singh in a written reply to Shri Vijay Goel in Rajya Sabha today.
