Union Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Shri Nitin Gadkari launched a road safety website here today at the Ministerial Meet on Status of Road Safety and Safe Mobility Initiatives in India. Speaking on the occasion, he said that cost of road accidents in the country is equivalent to 3% of GDP. In order to address the issue there is a need to spread awareness on road safety through education, strict enforcement of laws, use of e-governance and proper road and traffic engineering, he added. He further added that identification of accidental spots is a must. All segments of the society have to be more sensitive towards this issue, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Shri Vijay Chhibber said that issue of road safety needs to be put in the heart of developmental agenda and it requires participation of all stakeholders.
The Minister also gave away Road Safety Awards to state organizations. The awardees included AP State Road Transport Corporation, Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation, State Transport, Haryana, Odisha State Road Transport Corporation, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation and Nagaland State Transport.
