Setting up of Urea Plant by Government of India with Gas Feed in Chabahar Region in Iran

Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shri Gholamreza Ansari, called on the Minister for Chemicals & Fertilisers Shri Ananth Kumar in New Delhi this evening. The two leaders decided to explore the possibilities of further cooperation in the field of energy, fertilizers and petrochemicals. The Ambassador spoke about setting up of the proposed Urea-Ammonia plant by RCF & GNFC in JV in Iran and further stated that Iran is keen in furthering cooperation particularly in the field of petrochemicals as Iran has large quantity of hydrocarbons, which can be used for development of these industries.

The Minister (C&F), while responding stated that Iran and India enjoy long standing relationship and this relationship should be converted into an arrangement mutually beneficial to both the countries. He also stated that India is also keen to explore of the possibilities of setting up of reverse SEZs particularly in the area of fertilizers and petrochemicals in Iran. These reverse SEZs can produce globally competitive products. Shri Anant Kumar also stated that India would like to work on a similar arrangement with Iran for this Urea-Ammonia JV Plant on lines of OMIFCO in Oman.

The Minister also proposed to enter into a MOU with Iran for cooperation in the area of energy, fertilizer and petrochemicals and also form a Joint Working Group between India and Iran in these areas with officers from both the countries participating in this JWG to work out a roadmap for cooperation by the two countries.

The Iranian Ambassador extended an invitation to Hon'ble Minister to visit Iran. He also assured that Iran and India should jointly work together for a successful future of both the countries.
