Small Food Processing Units

As per the latest census [Fourth All India Census of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME)] conducted (with base reference year 2006-07), wherein the data was collected till 2009 and results published in 2011-12, the estimated number of registered food processing units in MSME sector were 2.23 lakh.

The Government facilitates the promotion and development of MSME sector including food processing units, through implementation of various schemes/programmes relating to credit, infrastructure development, technology upgradation, marketing, entrepreneurial/skill development etc. The major schemes include Credit Guarantee Scheme, Credit Linked Capital Subsidy Scheme, Performance and Credit Rating Scheme, Cluster Development Programme, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Programme, Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme and Skill Development Programme.

As per the latest MSME Census (2006-07), the contribution of food processing units in MSME sector, in terms of value addition, was Rs. 42, 659 crore. In terms of employment, the total number of persons engaged in registered food processing units in MSME sector was 14.68 lakh.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Food Processing Industries Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
