Union Water Resources to Visit Arsenic Affected Districts Uma Bharti Inaugurates International Conference on Natural Treatment System for Safe and Sustainable Water Supply

Union Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Minister Sushri Uma Bharti has said that she will personally visit Arsenic affected districts of West Bengal, Assam, Bihar and UP to assess the reason for it and to find out suitable ways to tackle this problem. Inaugurating an International Conference on Natural Treatment System for safe and Sustainable Water Supply in India: results from Saaf Pani here today, she said 86 district of the country are worst affected by arsenic and another 282 district by fluoride.

The Minister said diminishing ground water level all over the world is matter of concern. She expressed the hope that experts from all over the world who are attending the conference will come out with a useful and suitable strategy to overcome this problem.

The Water Resources Minister said that water conservation is a matter of concern all over the world. She said we have to reinvent the old and traditional systems of water conservation because these systems have proved their usefulness over the period. The Minister said We have to integrate the traditional systems with the new scientific techniques to fulfill our water conservation needs. Referring to the successful water conservation methods adopted in Gujrat Sushri Bharti suggested that these methods can be adopted elsewhere in the country.

The Minister expressed concern over increasing pollution in higher Himalayas and said that shrinking of glaciers is a matter of grave concern which has to be addressed appropriately. She also referred to the traditional water conservation techniques of Chal & Khal practiced in hilly areas of the country and suggested that such traditional techniques are still useful. Sushri Bharti also suggested large scale plantation of Kaans vegetation along the river banks to keep the river clean and pollution free.

The two day conference is being attended by experts from several countries including Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria etc.
