ARAI is one of the Test Agencies, notified under Rule 126 of Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, for Type Approval Certification of vehicles as per the notified rules, standards and procedures. Procedure of Type approval certification of motor vehicles is in accordance with AIS: 017-2000, as amended from time to time. CMVR Compliance requirements are given in Chapter V (Rule 91 to Rule 126) of Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.
Periodical compliance of vehicles for emission performance is checked by carrying out Conformity of Production Testing (COPT) of vehicles by the Test Agency notified under Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989.. Vehicles randomly drawn from the production line are tested to verify compliance to the provisions of CMVR.
Government has decided to make on - road testing of vehicles mandatory and accordingly Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued a notification vide No. GSR 889 (E) dated 16.09.2016. The test will become mandatory from 2023. The detailed notification is also available on MoRTH website.
