Following is the text of Vice President's message:

"It is with the deep sorrow that I have learnt of the death of Dr. Syed Ahmed, hon'ble Governor of Manipur.

On this sad occasion, I recall Dr. Syed Ahmed's long and distinguished public service. He was a leading figure of Maharashtra's political firmament and his departure leaves a large void. A humanist, he was dedicated to working for the uplift of the weakest sections of the society. In his capacity as the Minister for Housing, Slum Improvement, House Repairs and Reconstructions in the State Government, he worked to address the issues facing the homeless and the slum dwellers in Maharashtra.

He had a special role in the advancement and welfare of minorities in India, particularly in Maharashtra. He worked to streamline the Haj pilgrimage process as the Chairman of the Maharashtra State Haj Committee and worked tirelessly to improve the access to education for the poorer segments of the society. He was also a scholar, having written on topics as diverse as revolutionary poetry to the role of Muslims in India's freedom struggle.

I join the nation in mourning this loss and wish to convey my condolences to Dr. Ahmed's family. May his soul rest in eternal peace."
