Amnesty International condemns Thailand for barring Hong Kong activist

Thai government must not let its geopolitical interests take over its human rights obligations, said the Amnesty

Human rights watchdog Amnesty International on Monday criticised Thailand for preventing Hong Kong pro-democratic activist, Joshua Wong ,from entering the country to speak to Thai students.

Wong was earlier barred from entering Thailand and detained once he arrived at the Bangkok International Airport, BBC reported.

The Amnesty said the Thai government must not let its geopolitical interests take precedence over its human rights obligations, accrording to Efe news.

"The detention and deportation of Joshua Wong is yet another indicator that Thailand's military government will use any available means to stifle political discourse in the country," Champa Patel, Amnesty International's Senior Research Adviser for South East Asia and the Pacific, said.

 

"Thailand's borders should not be used as tools for suppressing conversations about democracy and other matters of national and global concern," Patel added.
