United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for a credible and peaceful Presidential election in Maldives, scheduled for Saturday.

Given that the election is being held in the backdrop of overthrow of former president, Mohamed Nasheed, Ban in a statement urged all the candidates and stakeholders to overcome their past differences and respect the election results 'no matter who wins'.

"He (Ban) urges all Maldivians to work together in a constructive manner toward national harmony and democratic consolidation. Ban highlights, in particular, the need for a renewed commitment to the institutional reform process," said a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Secretary General.
