FMs of 47 nations to meet in Asia-Europe meet

Finance ministers and top officials from India and 46 other countries are likely to gather here on October 14-15 to deliberate on ways for sharing Asia's dynamic growth with Europe and the rest of the world.p

The two-day 10th Asia Europe Meeting (ASEM), to be hosted by Thailand, is themed 'Strengthening Dynamic Partnership, Sharing Dynamic Growth'.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram is likely to attend the meet.

The ASEM was officially established in 1996 at the first summit in Bangkok.

ASEM is an inter-regional forum which consists EU, Asean plus three regional grouping, as of 2008, India, Mongolia and Pakistan and as of 2010, Russia, Australia and New Zealand.

Heads of international organisations, including European Commission, ASEAN Secretariat, World Bank, International Monetary Funds (IMF), European Central Bank (ECB), and Asian Development Bank (ADB) will also attend the meeting.

This ASEM Finance Ministers' Meeting aims to promote closer cooperation between Asia and Europe and share experiences and prospects regarding economic development, as well as financial and fiscal issues.

In addition, the meeting will help bolster potentials and strengthen economic, financial and fiscal ties of both regions, Thailand's Finance Minister Kittiratt Na Ranong said.

Kittiratt added that by hosting the ASEM Finance Ministers' Meeting, Thailand would have opportunity to learn from knowledge and experiences shared among members, especially on the recent European financial crisis and their policies and measures taken to mitigate these issues.
