At least 47 people have been killed and dozens more injured in a blaze that tore through a fireworks factory outside Jakarta, police said today, triggering explosions and sending plumes of black smoke into the air.
"In total 47 people died. We don't know for sure the number of people who are still unaccounted for," Harry Kurniawan, Tangerang Kota police chief, told Kompas TV.
The incident occurred at around 9 am at the factory located in Tangerang area, reports Xinhua news agency.
"The bodies were fully charred and we are currently looking for more bodies," a police officer said.
According to the official, the explosion was triggered by a short circuit and the subsequent fire was caused due to too many raw materials stored in the building.
