US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will attend a national memorial service in honour of anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela in South Africa's Johannesburg on Tuesday.

"The President and Mrs. Obama will be attending the national memorial service for former President Mandela on Tuesday in Johannesburg," a White House official said.

No other details were immediately available.

The memorial service would be held at a 94,000-seat soccer stadium in Johannesburg.

This is the first of two major memorial events for Mandela next week.

Mandela's funeral is scheduled for Sunday in his home town of Qunu in Eastern Cape province. It was unclear whether Obama would stay through Sunday to attend Mandela's burial.
