Suspected Taliban fighters today attacked an army checkpost in Pakistan's troubled northwest near the Afghan border, leading to an intense gunfight in which nine militants were killed, military sources said.

"In North Waziristan, terrorists attacked a security forces checkpost. In retaliatory fire by security forces, nine terrorists were killed," a Pakistani military source said.

He added that three soldiers were injured in an IED blast in South Waziristan agency.

North Waziristan, a site of frequent US drone strikes, is one of seven semi-autonomous tribal regions in Pakistan.

The region is believed to be a stronghold of Taliban and al-Qaeda.
