Russia claims Syrian opposition provoked foreign intervention

Russian Foreign Minister says they have got enough evidence proving the same

ANI Beijing

Russia has claimed Syrian opposition had staged provocations to trigger foreign intervention, based on the United Nations report on chemical attacks in Damascus suburbs last month.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said they have got enough evidence that reports about use of chemical weapons reflected provocation, Xinhua reports.

Lavrov said the UN Security Council would examine the evidence along with a report submitted by UN inspectors, who investigated chemical weapons attack in Syria, to find out who had done it.

UN created an inspection team at the request of the Syrian government to examine whether chemical weapons were used during the civilian conflict.

However, the plan was not inclusive of finding out which side used the weapons.

The United States and Russia reached a diplomatic agreement on September 14 to give one week's time to Syria to present a comprehensive listing of its chemical weapons.

The agreement also called for a UN resolution allowing for the use of force, if the Syrian government fails to offer the list.

The Syrian opposition has rejected the US-Russia deal and refused to declare a ceasefire with the government.
