Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has postponed announcing name of his vice presidential running mate that was scheduled to be made following a deadly attack in Nice that killed at least 80 people.

"In light of the horrible attack in Nice, France, I have postponed news conference concerning my Vice Presidential announcement," Trump tweeted.

Trump, 70, was to formally make his vice presidential announcement on Friday.

At least 80 people were killed on Friday, when a truck ploughed into a crowd in the French resort of Nice in a "terrorist" attack on revellers watching a Bastille Day fireworks display.

Trump condemned the attack and adopted a tough posture against terrorism.

"We're not going to have a society, we're not going to have a world anymore," Trump was quoted as saying by Fox News.

"There's no respect for anything or anybody and this has to be dealt with very harshly," he said.

"It sounds like here we go again. This is crazy what's going on. It's a horrible thing. It's bedlam," the presumptive Republican nominee said.

Trump reiterated that US President Barack Obama must confront radical Islam if it is the ultimate cause of the attack in Nice.

"If it is radical Islamic terrorism, it's about time he said so. If it's radical Islamic terrorism, he ought to say it. People would sigh with relief if he said that," he said.

In another interview to Fox News later in the night, Trump said that he would ask Congress for a declaration of a war.

"I would. I would. This is war. If you look at this, this is war, coming from all different parts. And frankly, it is a war and we are dealing with people without uniforms," he said.
