Birla Institute of Management Technology may not be in the premier league of B-Schools but in terms of placements, the institute is faring well. Consider this: average salary levels at the institute have increased by as much as Rs 1 lakh during the institute's final placement process.

This year, the average salary offered was around Rs 4.5 lakh compared to the average of Rs 3.5 lakh which was offered last year. Highest salary offered to students has increased to Rs 6.5 lakh per year, which is way above the highest salary offer of Rs 4.5 lakh that was made last year.

The placement process started in the first week of November and it is expected to go on till January. Around 250 students participated in the placement process and out of this 160 students have been placed so far.

L Ramani, assistant professor, in-charge of the placement process, attributes the increase in salary levels to the institute's efforts in attracting as many IT companies as possible has paid off.

"We have been working towards attracting IT companies to recruit from our campus. Salary levels in IT companies generally tend to increase rapidly than the other industries.

Their salary levels are much much higher than the manufacturing sector where there has been a jump in salaries but not to the extent of the IT industry," he added.

This time, over 40 companies came to the campus for recruitment and the list includes big names like Infosys, HCL, AC Nielson and Pantaloon Retail. Birla Institute offers a two year PGDM program in management, insurance and retail and students from all the three programs have been receiving offers.

IT companies have been the biggest recruiters this time. IT biggies including Infosys, Wipro, Satyam, HCL were some of the top recruiters. This apart, top companies from other sectors like retail, insurance, banking also came to the campus.

Genpact, A C Nielson, Madura Garments, ICICI Insurance, Pantaloon Retail were some of the companies which recruited from the Birla Institute.
