Generational differences at workplace

The study found that when it comes to positivity in the workplace, generation Z rate their experiences very positively

With five generations in the workplace (more than ever before), organisations are today witnessing an atmosphere characterised by tension and misunderstanding. Therefore, it's no surprise that companies are concerned about the impact of this tension on productivity and creativity. According to a global study conducted of over five million employees by Hay Group, generations at today's workplace fall in five categories: traditionalists (1928-1944); baby boomers (1945-1964); generation X (1965-1979); generation Y (1980-1994); generation Z (1995+).

The study found that when it comes to positivity in the workplace, generation Z rate their experiences very positively. But these rapidly decline, with generation Y the least positive of all of the generations.
 
So what are the leadership skills required to manage this diverse workforce? The study says leaders don't need to develop generation-specific skills rather they should be able to adapt leadership styles to suit the individual. Leaders should invest in socialisation programmes that help young people adjust as they start to establish themselves in their chosen career. The study suggests supporting generation Z to develop social skills to navigate the workplace and using empathy to create an environment that gets the best from everyone, regardless of age.
