When you strongly desire something, the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it,” this is the favourite quote of Immadi Prudhvi Tej, this year's IIT-Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) topper.
The 17-year-old boy from Andhra Pradesh, says he is surprised at his IIT-JEE topper status.
“After my eleventh, I started preparing for IIT staying in a hostel at Vijayawada. On an average, used to study eight hours a day. I never followed any strategy but my teachers' guidance. Few days after joining the institute, I knew I would be able to beat others, but being the number one is a surprise to me,” he says smiling.
A native of Dwaraka Tirumala from West Godavari district, Tej studied at the Viswabharathi School at Gudivada till class tenth and went on to Sri Chaitanya Institute for his intermediate course.
“Initially, I was not expecting to achieve this and be the topper.

After joining my institute for preparation one year back, I got the confidence from my teachers”, he said modestly, terming hard work as luck. Though he ultimately wishes to be an IAS officer, at present he wants to study electrical engineering at IIT-Bombay, his dream destination.
At leisure, Tej prefers books for company. A game of badminton, he says, strengthens his focus and determination. “I am very fond of cricket, and I have not missed a single Indian match during the World Cup cricket,” he says.
Born to a businessman, his father, Srinivas Rao, is a jeweller and mother Rani, a housemaker. His only elder sister is a student of Chartered Accountancy.
Last year A Jithendar Reddy, a boy from Andhra Pradesh's Warangal district topped IIT-JEE.
Released by the nodal agency Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K), the JEE results have declared around 13,602 candidates as qualified to seek admission for 9,618 seats in the IITs. In all, 468,240 candidates appeared for JEE-2011 against over 450,000 last year.
Following Tej who took the IIT-JEE test from IIT-Madras zone is Shubham Mehta of IIT Bombay (IIT-B) zone who bagged the second position in the merit list. Among girls, this year 1,491 students could qualify out of a total of 108,647 girls who appeared in JEE-2011.
Apart from the 15 IITs, Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU)and Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, institutes like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Rajeev Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) and Indian Maritime University (formerly DG Shipping) will also admit candidates based on JEE-2011 scores.
Also, for the first time the scanned images of the objective Response Sheets (answer scripts) will be accessible to the candidates on the JEE website startingfrom May 27, 2011.
