Management institutions have started equipping themselves with relevant skills required in areas like carbon trading following acceptance of the Kyoto Protocol shortly.

Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, Kolkata today inaugurated its 'Energy green house (GHG) accounting cell ' in partnership with Energy Wise India, a project of US Agency for International Development (USAID).

The cell will provide necessary planning process, carbon trading and energy audit to both private and public sector organisations.

IISWBM has taken up this as a capacity building exercise in GHG accounting, carbon trading and related activities.

"Energy Wise India will provide all the required funding and technical expertise for this capacity building programme that will include lectures, in-house training and pilot projects," said Chinmoy Jana, faculty of energy management stream, IISWBM.

IISWBM will provide technical assistance and consultancy to two companies, Kolkata based Indian Carbon and Cuttack based Indian Charge Chrome, as pilot projects.

High polluting industries like power, iron and steel, fertiliser and textile might gain from the clean development mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto protocol, which allows companies reducing carbon emissions to sell their 'credits 'to developed countries unable to reduce emissions

Shenaz Atcha, global environment energy advisor at Energy Wise, said United States was promoting energy conservation activities and reducing emission of greenhouse gases like carbon-di-oxide and methane.

"US is not a signatory of the Kyoto protocol but that is due to compelling economic reasons," admitted Atcha.

An appropriate mix of higher fuel efficiency and lower oil dependency could lead to reduction of GHG emission, said Kamesh Gupta of General Motors Corporation.
