Environment studies is a nascent field in India. But with growing awareness about the environment, more students are likely to take interest in the field.

Customers and stakeholders would expect corporations to be more responsible about the impact of their operations on the environment. There are organisations which focus on green buildings and green operations. Responsible attitude towards environment will become a hygiene factor for businesses in foreseeable future.

Sustainability, pollution control, emission reduction, climate change, disaster/risk mitigation, carbon advisory, clean energy generation and so on will be the areas of focus.

Environmental engineering, science, law, management and economics are likely to become sought-after qualifications. The demand is expected to be around 8,000-10,000 professionals every year.

While there are acclaimed institutions in developed countries with courses and research programmes in the field, it is still under-explored in India. There is opportunity in the country for specialised institutions of higher education and research in the field of environment conservation and sustainability.
