Dear Students,
LAST WEEK WE ASKED:
Do you think a placement reporting standard will be good for both B-schools and students?
BEST RESPONSE
The success of the placement reporting standard depends more on the readiness of the country’s B-schools to accept it rather than on recruiters. Policies and processes that govern recruitment differ greatly in companies. Not all companies are designed to enter campus placements with a detailed breakup of the salary. They will do is if a large number of B-schools demand adherence to such standards. But if the standards are being followed by just a handful, there are less chances of it being as credible as it aims to be. It should be uniformly followed in every B-school to reap the benefits of the proposed reporting standard.

OTHER RESPONSE
It is a bonafide cause and with the help of placement reporting standards we will have verified, quantifiable, measurable parameters upon which one can judge the B-schools. The institutes themselves will have sensible rankings and all those unverified, paid for rankings will automatically cease to have a raison d'être in the system. But a central full time agency is imperative to monitor the claims made by the lower-rung B-schools. It will not be hard for them to hoodwink the public by claiming to follow them unless there is central agency that can conclusively verify their claims.

It is aimed at incorporating increased transparency and comparability of placement figures among B-schools. It may be advantageous for aspiring candidates, recruiters and leading B-schools but poses a major threat on the low and mid-rung institutes which have been lacking in decent placement results, possibly due to sheer hard luck in terms of opportunities or finance. Given a chance, few of them may attempt to improve their placements by revising their standards and corporate presence, but for those underprivileged schools, standardisation may cause irrevocable immediate wounds. They may completely lose out in race, failing their main purpose of providing education.

Recent times have witnessed the plethora of MBA institutes in the country ,each claiming to be superior than other by advertising lucrative placements . There's hardly any uniformity in the placement reports among these institutes. Introduction of placement reporting standards is a great step in this regard. It aims to bring in more transparency and clarification by declaring Maximum Earning Potential (MEP), which includes cash component, non-cash components and other valuables; instead of CTC, which doesn't specify any guaranteed cash component;thus misleading the students. This draft would serve as a yardstick for the institutes which are thriving only on brand names; rather than focusing on the quality.

Students will definitely be benefitted if a placement reporting standard is in place. Although there are some immediate troubles for lower rung B-schools but the gains from such a practice are going to outrun them. Increased level of transparency will do good to both the B-schools and students. Institutions lying at the lower rung of ranking can help themselves by imparting quality education and laying a well connected alumni platform.

There should be a placement reporting standard as many students apply for a B-School based on the placement scenario of the college, as most of them will want to get into one of the top companies. It is important that there is a uniform scale that is maintained in order to avoid B-Schools from ranking themselves as No.1. The figure helps the students as well as the B-schools to improve in a healthy way. By this method, the B-schools can also compete and come past their shortcomings.
- Martin Thiagaraj M, Loyola Institute of Business Administration (LIBA)
The placement reporting standard has become need of the hour for an MBA aspirant to be able to compare various B-schools based on the recruiters, the job role and the money being offered. The candidates can choose a B-school keeping in mind their background and where they aspire to reach after 2 years of MBA. A B-school also has an edge in alluring more recruiters and students to come to campus on the basis of the existing list of recruiters, fair ranking and the potential of its students which is being showcased in the placement reporting standard, as there will be no misinterpretations about that B-school.
