Dear Students,
LAST WEEK WE ASKED:
In the light of the TASMAC event, do you think domestic education institutes are safer bet for Indian students than overseas education centres? Why?
BEST RESPONSE
When selecting an educational institute for higher education a lot of background study is needed into accreditations, feedback of students, and institute's track record, which is not an easy task to carry out in case of foreign universities. On top of it there are issues regarding opacity in fees structure and false claims of financial assistance in today's current competitive environment to lure students from India. Landing in a situation like the 60 MBA students of TASMAC- London is a career threatening situation. Pursuing education at domestic institutes is a safer bet, where due-diligence can be carried out comparatively easily.

Surely, domestic education institutes are a safer bet for Indian students than overseas education centres. A student can check about the authenticity of a particular institute in India but it is not an easy task to validate the identity of overseas education centres. As far as overseas education is concerned, admission procedures tend to be different at each institute. Add to that, implementation of stringent visa norms makes the admission procedure altogether quite fuzzy.
- Shivam Chhabra, Integral University, Lucknow.
Domestic education institutes are a safer bet for Indian students than overseas centers. TASMAC is not a British university but it is a Pune based education provider in London. So all those students who went to study for the same education in UK with the same institution already available in India are because they want to live and stay permanently in the UK. India is an emerging country and there are lots of opportunities in India. The days when foreign education was a safe bet are gone. Today, domestic education institutes are performing well so it is better not to waste money and time to study abroad.
- Milan Malkan, Amrut Modi School of Management, Ahmedabad University
If one gets to go to an international institute of some repute then only that person should go for it otherwise it's a risky bet as the fee involved in international education of all types is huge. These days there are so many fake institutes around the world that it is really difficult to make out the genuine ones. While applying in Indian institutes its easier to check background details which saves money as well as ensures authenticity with education at par to international universities due to competition in the education sector.
- Prateek Agrawal, Shanti Business School, Ahmedabad
Domestic education is safer than overseas education for Indian students because it is economical, reliable and less restricted for the students. Overseas education involves cumbersome procedure in terms of selecting a good abroad university for admission, huge amount of investment, peers and local law practices. Whereas, domestic education provides you a easy platform while giving a common test which is accepted majorly in domestic colleges. So students should see that "all that glitters are not gold".
- Manav Badhwar, Amity Business School, Noida
Overseas education is much preferable as compared to Indian education. In the era of globalisation itself, we limit ourselves to India. To transform ourselves, one should gain knowledge in a developed nation as one can attain their expression . One is not doing justice by not taking admission in a good ranked college. Right guidance and perfect knowledge can make the flavours of success in a unique way as more Indians graduating from overseas have held the name of India in high spirits in India and abroad.
- Amandeep Singh Anand, Shanti Communication School
Given how uncertain and quickly the policies of these countries towards visas change, it does seem a lot more risky for the students to study overseas. Students study abroad with an aim of eventually getting job offers there. And if the policy changes, it jeopardises the students' careers. The cost of studying abroad is huge and if they are not allowed to work there thereafter or worse if they are asked to leave then the burden on the students increase manifold. On the contrary the opportunities in India for students are equally good. With the growing economy, domestic education institutes seem a safer bet for Indian students.
- Kamal Kannan, Vinod Gupta School of Management, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
The unfortunate turnout of the events at TASMAC has literally shaken the faith in the overseas education of the Indian students. The loathsome turmoil by the sudden shutdown of the institute has left its imprint on the career of the students and the staff members, who have no role in such event. But this incident doesn't guarantee that education is much safer back in the home. Hence, students should analyse the establishment details of any institute, whether domestic or foreign, before getting admission into such dubious institutes.
- Dipika Sahoo, College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar
One specific event can't decide all the future course of action. It is indeed sad that TASMAC had to close its operation due to sundry reasons and students had to suffer. But we can't disregard the impact of foreign education on India as international degree comes with its own package. Proper research, time investment, through investigation of the institute and the country can prevent students from such experiences in the future. Students need to take a call whether they are going abroad for the degree or just for the international exposure which could be done here in India also.
- Nilaya Mitash Shanker, Shri Ram Swaroop Memorial College Of Engineering And Management (SRMCEM), Lucknow
Since 2003 TASMAC's operations are active in India and so has got a strong presence. But in spite of such hold there has been no such influence on Indian counter B-schools. India schools are distinguished by their students who have the best of the minds of the world. And so every corporate company hires them for the cerebral content these candidates offer. It is good to open such centres which can provide an exposure to many students but the safer avenues to search in case of overseas education by domestic education is not a big issue.
- Nandish Agarwal, Galgotias College of Engineering and Technology, Greater Noida
Domestic education institutes can be held accountable for their actions in a more direct way than the overseas education centres where the Indian Embassy has to take up the matter with the concerned authority there. Also, considering the exorbitant cost of education overseas, domestic education institutes look all the more a safer bet. However, this is not to say that students should not go overseas, rather they should go for reputed institutes only. It is important to demystify the fact that studying from lower-rung overseas institutes is better than the domestic ones.
- Rahul Gautam, IIIT-Delhi
There is severe problem of regulation and authenticity of these institutes, be it within the country or abroad. It is such sad state of affairs of the students who have got enrolled at such institutes. But people in India still get glazed eyes with anything foreign attached to names of firms. Earlier also there have been instances of tie-ups with some obscure US-based institutes, which ended up in a mess. The only solution to this kind of a problem is stringent measures taken by authorities to check such incidents in future. And the students and parents also must stop being so gullible.
- A Bhuvana Bhimaiah, Alagappa University
Keeping in mind the recent TASMAC event, domestic education institutes are better than overseas education centers. The cost of education in India is low as compared to overseas. Moreover sometimes Indian students have to face racism in other parts of the world.
- Ashwani Kumar, Apeejay Stya University, Gurgaon
Domestic education institutes serves the knowledge of the one's own nation making him competitive for the nation development. With today's world of rising educational and technological standards, advancement in domestic institutes completely fulfills the need of a student to go abroad. It helps student to pursue education of international standards accommodating the financial problems and even job perspective in home-nation itself.
- Abhay Agarwal, Apeejay Stya University, Gurgaon
I think an international overview is required to a professional. This brings the global standards of knowledge and practice to our country to bring it to the same level. It enables us to have a broad view over the whole world considering the impact of our each step on it. Increment in education aids should be done to keep this facility available for maximum number of interested and deserving students irrespective of an individual's financial conditions.
- Chanakya Shukla, Apeejay Stya University, Gurgaon
The TASMAC event is an internationally recognised initiative in the field of management. It is time for changing the mentality of having quality education is only possible in developed countries. The scenario has changed now and foreign students are also coming to India for getting conceptual clarity from our experienced faculties. There is no doubt to have competency in education at domestic institutes in compare to foreign institutions. It is safer bet with high competition in India.
