LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you think UGC and AICTE should have gone beyond issuing notices and taken some action against IIPM?

It has quite often been reported by UGC concerning students that IIPM is not a recognized institute. UGC has issued notice to IIPM and also instructed students that its technical programmes are invalid. But till now these measures have served no purpose. Also a lot of time has been lost in this fuss so a strict action against the institute need to implemented with minimum lag. As otherwise, the presence of an institute which is working against the rules and regulations will obviously demean the value of governing bodies.

In a liberal democracy that upholds the concept of a free economy, freedom of choice rests with the people who are asked to pay. The basic problems are lack of transparency in educational institutions like IIPM and lack of awareness among the student population. The real solutions are greater transparency and more information. Enhancing the powers of Govt. outfits like UGC and AICTE is missing the wood for trees and thereby helping the nexus between government babus and vested interests.

Actions taken by the University Grants Commission and the All India Council for Technical Education are correct. IIPM must advertise what they are capable of providing. IIPM must take the notices seriously and must follow as prescribed by the University Grants Commission and the All India Council for Technical Education. IIPM must recruit new and experienced faculty members.They must constantly ask for opinions of students regarding their faculty members.

The slogans, luring advertisements and dynamic marketing make institutes like IIPM look parallel to premier institutes like IIMs. UGC and AICTE could have brought out advertisements in the leading newspapers as well as national channels showcasing of what actual criteria to check for while taking admissions in any of these institutes.They could have acted on bringing out realities about its association with foreign universities, tax procedural s and its licences . The scrapping of any institution requires proper legal procedures and and the future of the students studying there also remains an integral part.
