Dear Students,
LAST WEEK WE ASKED: Do you think IIMs should look to add more varied disciplines to their curriculum?
BEST RESPONSE
Anything and everything added to boost management education and delivering up-to-date management education is welcome. The added discipline must conform to global business education and changing realities of India. This will ameliorate ranking of IIMs, boost students morale, have spillover effect on other B-school etc. This will help India to produce quality manager with industry standard employability skills. Besides, A review panel must be set up to monitor the effect of added disciplines.

OTHER RESPONSES
The sole aim to establish the IIMs was to provide quality management education. There is no doubt about the quality of management education imparted by IIMs. As these qualified professional will be making business deals, completing target and analyzing the market what they need to learn is how to tackle stress and work-life balance. Not much but little introduction to philosophy, spirituality, psychology might make some difference as managing one’s life is as much important as managing business. Some course of leadership development and team management will add more value in terms of managing relations with peers.

IIMs should definitely look forward to add varied disciplines such as luxury brand or family business management in its curriculum. Such courses would provide an opportunity for students to delve into finer intricacies which otherwise could only be learned through several years of experience. So, directly taking up these courses as a student minimizes the chances of mistakes in early career rather helps to succeed by applying what one has learnt. Thus, it is these specialisation which will lead the future transformation and if they are brought to forefront by institutes like IIMs will surely exhibit immense potential.

As IIMs represent the face of the business schools in the country, they must be equipped with all the possible means to facilitate students achieve their goals which can be materialized only when they include more disciplines to meet the aspirations of students with wide range of aspirations. No stone must be left unturned when it comes to projecting the IIMs on par with international business schools and on this front the last thing one could wish for would be the lack of enough number of disciplines.

Every entity is having its core competencies because of which it is known. IIMs are the institutes which are excellent in imparting management education to the country. In a developing country like India there is a need of innovations and addition of new disciplines which would bring the nation to another level of excellence. The life cycle theory of management says, every product comes into existence and follows its growth into a mature product and then declines. When the product comes at its maturity stage, better to add a few more properties to it, so that it exists forever.

There are many vibrant disciplines which I believe IIMs can include in their courses like tourism, agri-business, health administration , infra management etc. These unexplored sectors have lot of potential which on combining with exuberant and bright students of IIMs can churn gold for the country. As India is rapidly changing due to globalization which has created a competitive environment . It was found that the fresh graduates of these streams are facing problems in managing the available resources. This has created a need for specially designed MBA graduates for the effective and efficient management of resources.

With the growing market needs the profiles being offered today are quite diverse rather than the usual ones. Companies today are opening up new frontier to individuals by making them better equip to take up roles with vast domain knowledge. With 1800 students from 6 established IIMs passing out every year, the secret to diversify and attain the tag of a holistic institute it becomes compulsory to make way for newer horizons. With a perspective for specialization and targeting market demand the institutes can not only enhance the quality but also allow students to choose from plethora of subjects.
