Dear Students,

LAST WEEK WE ASKED:  Do you think IITs should do a rethink on the new IIT-JEE pattern and change it?

BEST RESPONSE

The new proposed IIT –JEE pattern which includes fixed weightage from the Class 12 board exam results, can bring chaos as the scoring system varies in different states. The current pattern has both objectives as well as subjective after the inclusion of JEE advanced. This made sure that a student needs school education and not just private coaching. An inclusion of other criteria for securing a seat in an IIT will add pressure to a student, fighting with around 500,000 students in the country.
- Mithun JB, Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship (XIME), Bangalore.

OTHER RESPONSES

The performance of IIT graduates who have secured admission on the basis of new IIT-JEE format may be compared with those who have secured admission on the basis of older version of IIT-JEE. If the performance of the former is better, then IITs may continue with the newer IIT-JEE format with few amendments which do not adversely affect the quality of students admitted in IITs. If the performance of students who have been admitted as per old version of IIT-JEE is better, then IITs may rethink on the new IIT-JEE pattern and may make major amendments.
- Rituparna Saha Ray, Fr. C. Rodrigues Institute of Management Studies, Navi Mumbai.

IIT has made a step forward by changing the syllabus. Coaching institutes and students were misusing the earlier system. Students were totally focussed on cracking exams and not on real learning which is a must in order to excel in one's field. Now, with the changed syllabus, weightage has been distributed. Hence, now students will play equal attention to all subjects including sports. Moreover, its beneficial for students from middle and lower income families as they can't afford costly coaching.
- Nilaya Mitash Shanker, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee.

Students having the sound fundamental knowledge of all level of graded concepts will always outperform the students who are only confining their preparation to the pattern rather than understanding the concepts. The new pattern of JEE will pave the way for visible changes in the attitudes of students to the school education. When JEE questions are of the level of XII standard, students and parents will realize the futility of going through the rigorous of coaching institutions and neglecting school education. Hence, IITs should not rethink on the pattern.
- Sankalp Dede, SAMVIT School of Infrastructure Business, Pune.

IITs should rethink but not revert to the old pattern. It should further enhance quality in checking. The exam should be allow examiners to check the students' decision making ability, time management skills, basic knowledge of core subject and aptitude and reasoning.
- Jagdish Dangi, Rajgarh.

IITs should rethink on this pattern. IITs test problem solving skills in core subjects, while boards test overall performance in the stream. The students with good remembering capacity will score well in board exam and only those will have access to IIT-JEE, but the rest of the students who might not have remembering skills but have sharp brains and great intelligence, will be left out.  This pattern will be disadvantage to majority of the students who drop a year for IIT Preps.
- Vaishnavi Kadwe, SAMVIT School of Infrastructure Business, Pune.

Once a dream place for every tech student, IIT is now hurdled by inclusion of board marks in its admission criteria. It is a bane for the students who prepare exclusively for  winning a seat in prestigious institution rather than for boards. Board exams also includes the marks of the other than science subjects, which are just a pass concern for an IIT aspirant. It creates a lot of jeopardize among students, parents and even to admission council of IITs.
- Srujan Kumar Bommena, National Institute of Construction Management and Research, Pune.

The new system gives equal consideration to the boards and competitive examinations. This takes away the undue advantage that students of coaching classes have over those students who cannot afford coaching classes. This would result in more student diversity the IITs which is expected of these institutes of national importance.
- Swar Grover, GNDU, Amritsar.

Considering the new IIT-JEE pattern, there are serious concerns like the quality of students entering into the IIT, rising chances of cheating and other malfunctions. But the main reason for this new pattern is, the difficulty in finding out if the student has actually understood the topic or subject. Moreover, because of MCQs, students tend to mug up and memorize instead of actually trying to understand the concepts clearly. So whatever may be the exam pattern the students should strongly grip on the fundamentals to tackle any type of questions.
- Pratik Bairagi, Regional College of Management (Autonomous), Bhubaneswar.

As per the new pattern, JEE comprises of Main followed by Advanced wherein students need to be among the top 20 percentile of their respective boards for a big ticket to the IITs. It is easy to visualize that IIT JEE has been one of the toughest entrance exam since its inception still the new pattern is advantageous in maintaining focus equally on board exams which till now was losing stance among students. Thus, the recent change in pattern has been a concerted effort only for the benefit of students and does not necessitate any further thought process.
- Shivam Chhabra, Integral University, Lucknow.

The new IIT-JEE pattern has been a promising exercise which aims at prioritizing the board exams. But, the normalization process has yielded a varied outcome due to the differences in various state boards. Switching to the older system is not a rational decision in the current context where IITs are losing their sheen in the global market. The solution for this flaw is to follow a universal board pattern. But given the fact that this is a time consuming process, intermediate solutions like considering a certain percentile of individual boards for eligibility would solve this problem and serve purpose.
- Navjeet Goraya, Xavier Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship (XIME), Bangalore.

The  new IIT-JEE will ensure that the students not only focus on the examination but also on their board exams preparation which form the base of their further studies and their is no need to rethink even though proposal to hold a common national entrance test for admission to all the engineering courses and  giving weightage to class 12 board exam marks, has received opposition from the IIT circle.
