The book that inspired me

Two books that I have found to be helpful, thought provoking and inspirational, are Edward Luce's In Spite of the Gods and Nehru: The Invention of India by Shashi Tharoor.

Launched last year, In Spite of the Gods chronicles the rise of modern India and explains the contradictions that exist in India. The book explains how we have moved forward as a nation, the challenges we faced, the opportunities, the politics, the economics, the regions and the culture.

The book is about hope and the potential present in our country. It reflects well on how we have grown despite the adversities we face.

On the other hand, Tharoor's book is about Jawaharlal Nehru and his legacy: secularism, democracy, industrial and foreign policy. This book is a record of Nehru's grand vision.

While we may not agree with everything he did, we still have to agree that his vision was far ahead of his times and that he laid a great foundation for the country.
