In any organisation, we deal with two clear sets of people — the producers (employees) and the consumers (customers). Often, the differentiator between a great and a good company is to be found at the intersection of this paradigm. I read Stephen Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People some years ago and it has left a long and lasting impression on me. I could closely relate to the premise of independence leading to interdependence explained in the book.
The “habits” are actually plain common sense, but are often looked upon as being rarities. One of the best and most useful habits is putting “first things first”. Prioritising work, as the author explains, is a necessity in our day-to-day lives. Often, it’s said that the end justifies the means; only that, many a time, the end is the last uncontrolled and inevitable eventuality that just happens. A leader who seeks to build himself and his organisation should work towards an interdependent ethic at work, where teams become one, and deliver sustainable results.
The fullest realisation of the book is in the seamless transition it suggests towards private and public triumphs. The holistic coming together of the two triumphs leads to a cycle of renewal where great leaders, and also effective ones, revisit the journey to triumph, the wins or losses, and then embark on a spiral of growth once again.
