Joining the league of fellow Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs), IIM-Lucknow is also witnessing a tough placement season this year with the companies going slow on hiring due to the economic crisis.

A total of 267 IIM-L students are participating in campus placements currently underway before the convocation ceremony scheduled for March 17.

“So far, 72 companies have visited our campus for recruitment. While, some students have already received job offers, the rest would be placed in the next few days,” IIM-L Director Prof Devi Singh told the media.

Without commenting on pay packets on offer as a matter of policy, Prof Singh admitted that things were not as good as last year. “This is a tough year. The total impact of the economic downturn is greater than anyone could have anticipated. But, we are working hard as far as placing our students is concerned and all would be placed in the days to come, hopefully,” he retorted.

Besides, there has been a surge in the visit of public sector units (PSUs) to IIM-L this year.

“While, PSUs are getting a pool of good talent to recruit from, their participation has helped the institute in the placements,” Prof Singh underlined.

Interestingly, Prof Singh took over the office of IIM-L Director today for a second five-year term.

Prof Singh’s re-appointment has put to rest the controversy regarding the post, since the Union Human Resources Development (HRD) ministry was said to be keen on appointing another former IIM-L faculty as full-time director.

Meanwhile, the institute is facing shortage of professors and is keen to add another 10 as soon as possible for its main Lucknow and satellite Noida campuses. Presently, there are 65 faculties in both the campuses.

“We are in the process of hiking our fee, which is around Rs 5 lakh for the two-year management programme,” Prof Singh informed. The institute will also review the courses on offer to make them more ‘futuristic’.
