It was time to pass on the baton as one should know when to give up, said Rajnikant Patel, a day after resigning from the post of chief executive officer and MD of the Bombay Stock Exchange .

Patel spoke about the challenges during his tenure and the tasks before BSE now. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a seminar on mutual funds, organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, he said, setting up an SME exchange and starting currency derivatives trading were some of the tasks before the exchange.

He said the operations of the currency derivatives segment should start by September as Sebi officials would visit the exchange next week.

“It will be a separate segment within the exchange, with separate management and membership. It should start functioning within a month,” he said. While recollecting his BSE days, Patel said that demutualisation and corporatisation of BSE were some of the most challenging tasks in his tenure.

He did not comment on his future assignment.
