The Indian Institute of Capital Markets (IICM) is starting a full-time 'Securities Markets Programme' (SMP), a one-year course.

The SMP programme is designed to help one understand the building blocks of the securities markets, understand them conceptually, and to develop skill sets necessary to perform key technical activities in the market.

Prof G Sethu, dean, IICM, says," SMP's thrust is to prepare a cadre of professionals primarily for a technical career in the securities industries of developing markets. Students, upon completion of SMP, would acquire both conceptual and operational understanding of the securities markets."

He adds that the target audience would be students who are desirous of taking up full-time advanced education in managing the technical and policy aspects of securities markets in developing countries.

The programme will focus on processes such as the uniqueness of securities markets, the role of information in securities markets, the nature of security contracts, the economics of markets, the design features of securities markets, rationale and approaches to regulation and methods and tools for inquiry into the securities markets.

The institute organises executive education programmes (EEPs) that are specifically structured for the various professionals in the capital markets, having so far offered 618 EEPs and trained over 13,758 practicing professionals from India and other Asian countries.

It also offers a three months part-time certificate course in "Financial Engineering". The course essentially covers modules such as macroeconomics, mathematics and statistics for financial markets; financial markets, financial instruments and accounting and regulatory framework for hybrid instruments and securities.

The institute has been also been associated with development of capital markets in neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.

The Unit Trust of India established IICM (formerly UTI Institute of Capital Markets) in 1989 to tackle the paucity of qualified market professionals in India and realising the need to address the critical issue of capacity building in this domain, say sources, adding that the institute has pursued the task of assisting the capital market professionals in capacity building activities, following a multi-pronged approach that combines research, education, and advisory services.

The institute comprises faculty, administration, programme office, library and systems. The faculty team consists of eight full-time members who possess educational qualifications in economics, finance, and management and are highly experienced.

The faculty team works with professionals in the securities industry to conceive, design, and offer educational modules towards capacity building of securities industry personnel.

Besides, the institute's faculty team has produced research publications and has undertaken a number of advisory assignments.
