The Sensex recovered in the last half hour of trade to close in the positive.
Aluminium and bank stocks were in the limelight. Hindalco was up 5.64 per cent to finish at Rs 1,018.40 after the company announced that its output in September 2003 had jumped 54 per cent. National Aluminium was up 6.75 per cent to close at Rs 143.10.
State Bank of India closed at Rs 474, up 3.87 per cent over its previous close. State Bank of Mysore was up 9.22 per cent to end the day at Rs 1,966, Vijaya Bank was up 8.26 per cent at Rs 32.75, Corporation Bank was up 7.54 per cent at Rs 227.60, Bank of Baroda was up 4.28 per cent at Rs 166.95, Bank of India was up 3.97 per cent at Rs 56.35 and Punjab National Bank was up 3.04 per cent to finish the day at Rs 198.60.
HDFC was down 4.17 per cent to close at Rs 526.45 and ICICI Bank was down 1.75 per cent to end at Rs 223.65.
Heavyweight Reliance Industries was up 1.14 per cent to close at Rs 456.80 and ITC was up 0.88 per cent at Rs 843.90. Hindustan Lever finished at Rs 185.90, down 2.18 per cent from its previous close.
