Barley flares up on brisk buying

Barley prices climbed Rs 44.50 to Rs 1,694.50 per quintal in the future trading today on the back of speculative buying in tandem with firm spot markets sentiment.

Marketmen said low stocks position against brisk demand from beer making industries in spot markets mainly pushed up the barley prices here in futures.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, the May contract shot up by Rs 44.50, or 2.70% to Rs 1,694.50 per quintal, with an open interest of 11,680 lots.

The April contract also advanced by Rs 38.50, or 2.40% to Rs 1,641 per quintal, having an open interest of 6,080 lots.
