Barley rises on strong physical demand

Restricted supply in the markets also supported gains

Barley prices rose by Rs 24.50 to Rs 1,240.50 per quintal in futures trading today following increased buying by traders on firm spot markets sentiment.

Marketmen said strong demand from breweries and cattle-feed making industries amid restricted supply in physical markets mainly led to the rise here in futures price of barley.

At the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, barley prices for delivery in June added by Rs 24.50, or 2.01%, to Rs 1,240.50 per quintal, with an open interest of 8,490 lots.

For delivery in September, the prices gained Rs 26, or 2.01%, to Rs 1,322 per quintal, with an open interest of 80 lots.

The prices for delivery in July also rose by Rs 17, or 1.36%, to Rs 1,263 per quintal, with an open interest of 27,770 lots.
