Big gains for Smart Portfolios

For the first time in Smart Portfolios 2009, fund managers outperformed the benchmark in terms of returns. While the S&P CNX 500 index scaled nearly 4 per cent last week, Ajay Parmar, Amar Ambani and Praveen Panjwani were able to post gains in excess of 4 per cent each.

In the week under review, fund managers were mostly inactive with 14-odd trades conducted by the two of them. Cumulatively they were net buyers of stocks worth Rs 22,305. An investment of Rs 10 lakh at the start of Smart Portfolios on September 1, 2009, is now worth Rs 10.90 lakh.

BALANCED TRADES

Amar Ambani's net worth rose by 5.31 per cent to Rs 10.90 lakh from Rs 10.35 lakh for the week ended October 16, 2009. Ambani executed 12 trades, six each on the buy and sell sides. He was a net buyer of stocks worth Rs 22,430. Ambani booked gains of 28.13 per cent and 8.56 per cent on his investment in Nagarjuna Construction and Edelweiss Capital, respectively.

On the other hand, he booked losses of 1.18 per cent, 7.55 per cent and 4.48 per cent on Navneet Publications, MindTree and Patni Computers, respectively. Ambani's top three picks include Indian Overseas Bank (up 41.71 per cent from cost price), followed by MRF (up 29.92 per cent) and Lanco Infra (up 19.84 per cent).

Out of 22 stocks in his portfolio, five are trading below his purchase price with Suzlon (down 5.05 per cent) being the biggest loser. It is followed by 3i Infotech (down 3.65 per cent) and IndiaBulls Securities (down 3.59 per cent). Ambani too holds minimal cash of Rs 897 only, and his portfolio value has appreciated by 9.04 per cent till date.

Ajay Parmar's portfolio value appreciated sharply by 6.23 per cent to Rs 10.91 lakh from Rs 10.27 lakh in the preceding week. Parmar executed two trades, one on the buy and the other on the sell side and at the net level sold stocks worth Rs 125. He exited from Hinduja Ventures scrip for a loss of 7.4 per cent, and bought TV18 at a marginally discounted price.

The top three picks in his portfolio currently are Orbit Corporation (up 37.59 per cent from his cost price), Torrent Pharma (up 24.54 per cent) and HDIL (up 18.95 per cent). Out of the 18 stocks in his portfolio only three are in the red, TV18 is down 12.68 per cent from his cost price followed by Hinduja Ventures (down 3.74 per cent) and Sabero Organics (down 0.82 per cent). Parmar's net worth is up 9.08 per cent since inception, and he holds a small amount in cash.

Phani Sekhar's net worth appreciated by 2.34 per cent in the week under review. He did not execute any trades during the week. Of the 11 stocks in his portfolio just three are below cost price. Bharti Airtel (down 7.98 per cent) and Bharati Shipyard (down 6.97 per cent) are the prominent losers.
