Sayee Srinivasan has the knack of being at the right place at the right time. As a financial economist recently snapped up by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) based in Washington, DC, Srinivasan will work closely with the team that is looking to enact rules that will help implement the provisions of The Dodd Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

The Dodd-Frank law has a far reaching impact on the financial services business and its provisions are bringing the hitherto unregulated hedge funds industry under the regulatory lens. Speaking at a recent seminar, he said there is a huge opportunity for Indian commodities markets and they should take the lead and become price-makers. They should take the initiative or China would steal their show, he warned.

A couple of years ago, when the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was looking at reviving its fortunes in the derivatives segment, Srinivasan came on board as head-products strategy.

In his role at the BSE, Srinivasan was involved in various initiatives related to business and market development, and to the development of regulatory policy in India.

After working with three premier exchanges within a span of five years, he has now moved on to the other side of the fence as a regulatory official. His previous experience includes working with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) Group, based in Chicago and Mumbai, National Stock Exchange of India and OptiMark Technologies in the US.

His interests include building new markets and products across multiple asset classes, including equities, interest rates, corporate bonds and foreign exchange. He is also interested in the design of market structures and regulatory framework to facilitate market development. Srinivasan has a master's degree in finance from University of Mumbai and master's and doctorate in economics from the University of Texas, Austin, USA.
