Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) officials in collaboration with Central Depository Services (India) Ltd (CDSL) presented ‘The Investment Awareness Programme’, organised by Finesse, the finance club of Institute of Management, Nirma University, Ahmedabad for its students.

The students were introduced to the complete working of the stock exchange and measures to be taken while investing. The event was presided over by Malav Chokshi, Gujarat Regional Head BSE, Anoop Dwivedi, Deputy Manager, BSE Gujarat and Utpal Shah- Gujarat Regional Head, CDSL.

Dwivedi talked about the 135-year old BSE being the oldest and most experienced exchange in Asia (1875-present). He spoke about corporatisation of BSE, the roles and the responsibility of CDSL as a cleaning house and the trading facilities like equities, debt instruments, equity derivatives and currency derivatives on offer. “BSE Sensex is the barometer of Indian capital markets,” he said.

Shah guided the students through the framework for investment. He said that it is wise to invest in leaders and not followers. He explained the principles of safe investments and how to keep a check on modest expectations of returns. Further, he talked about the fixed price offering and the fundamentals that are involved in the same.

The message from Chokshi involved the safety issues and the risks attached. He said that listing provides liquidity to the securities and that protection of investors is ensured by full disclosures. He gave a brief understanding of the primary and the secondary market to the students. His interactive speech was replete with anecdotes and interesting facts about the share market. He also offered a perspective on the E-trading platform and said that it was safe and sound.

The main objective of this program was to create awareness amongst investors and prospective investors about the capital market and the safeguards that they need to follow while dealing in stock market, a release from the institute stated.

The Institute of Management, previously known as Nirma Institute of Management, is a constituent of the distinguished Nirma University of Science and Technology, Ahmedabad.
