Shares of small-cap companies continued their upward march with the S&P BSE small-cap index hitting four-month high today.
At 12:02 p.m., the S&P BSE Small-cap index was up 0.63% at 11,805 points, as compared to 0.53% rise in the S&P BSE Sensex. It hit an intra-day high of 11,816, its highest level since August 21, 2015.
Thus far in December 2015, the S&P small-cap index has gained 1.4%, outperforming the S&P BSE Sensex (down 0.65%) and S&P BSE Mid-cap index (up 0.68%).
Since September 7, when Sensex closed at 52-week low, the small-cap index surged 13% as compared to 9% rise in midcap and 4% gain in the benchmark index.
Out of 761 stocks from the small-cap index, more than half, or 417 stocks, have outperformed the index by gaining more than 14% each during the period.
Of these 16 stocks become multi-bagger and appreciated more than 100%. The list includes SpiceJet, Jet Airways, SMS Pharmaceuticals, TRF, Dhampur Sugars and Godfrey Phillips.
Arvind, Allcargo Logistics, Morepen Laboratories, TV Today Network, Tube Investments of India, Indraprastha Gas and Kwality are among 30 stocks from the small-cap index are currently trading at their 52-week highs on the BSE.
Among individual stocks, Tube Investments of India has surged to its record high of Rs 467, up 17% on the BSE today after the company announced that it will sell 14% of its stake in Cholamandalam MS General Insurance to its joint venture partner, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance for Rs 882.67 crore.
SMS Pharmaceuticals rallied 12% to Rs 138, also its new high on the BSE, after the company said it has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for an Andhra Pradesh-based manufacturing facility.
Greenply Industries soared 11% to Rs 1,050 on the BSE in intra-day trade after the company engaged in forest products business has fixed January 07, 2016 as the record date for the purpose of stock split.
The board of directors of the company at their meeting held on October 28, 2015 had approved the sub-division of equity shares of the company from the face value of Rs 5 to face value of Re 1 per equity share.
