Bulls Day Out: Sensex gains 727pts on global cues

The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of 448 points at 13,764 on the back of positive cues from the US markets. After displaying range-bound trend in morning trades, the index firmed up and rallied to higher levels in the latter half of the trading day.

The buying, which was seen across-the-board, momentum was so strong that the index rallied past the 14,000-mark to a high of 14,097. The Sensex finally ended with a significant gain of 5.5% (727 points) at 14,042. In the process, the index also recovered its entire intra-week loss of 11.5% (1,443 points) when the index touched a low of 12,558 yesterday. Eventaully, the index has ended the week with a marginal gain of 41 points.

 

The NSE Nifty soared over 5% (207 points) to 4,245.

The BSE Realty index surged 7.5% (290 points) to 4,103. The IT index rallied 6.7% (229 points) to 3,667, and Oil & Gas index gained 5.5% (496 points) at 9,468.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,700 stocks traded, 1,888 advanced, 740 declined and the rest were unchanged today.

SIZZLING STARS...

Satyam zoomed 10.5% to Rs 370. ICICI Bank soared 9% to Rs 628.

HDFC and Tata Power surged 8.3% each to Rs 2,308 and Rs 1,027, respectively.

DLF rallied 7.8% to Rs 427, and ONGC gained 7.3% at Rs 1,072.

Infosys moved up 6.6% to Rs 1,624. TCS, HDFC Bank and BHEL added 6.3% each to Rs 766, Rs 1,299 and Rs 1,711, respectively.

Jaiprakash Associates and Reliance rallied over 6% each to Rs 135 and Rs 2,052, respectively.

Reliance Communications, NTPC, Bharti Airtel, Reliance Infrastructure and Wipro advanced around 5% each to Rs 374, Rs 183, Rs 799, Rs 892 and Rs 417, respectively.

Ranbaxy and Tata Steel added 4.5% each to Rs 357 and Rs 480, respectively. Larsen & Toubro advanced over 4% to Rs 2,645.

Maruti, ITC and Sterlite were up around 3% each at Rs 742, Rs 191 and Rs 468, respectively.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Reliance Capital topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 441 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 336.25 crore), Bharti Airtel (Rs 266 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 229.35 crore) and SBI (Rs 197 crore).

Jaiprakash Associates led the volume chart with trades of nearly 1.50 crore shares followed by Reliance Natural Resources (1.34 crore), IFCI (1.27 crore), Sesa Goa (1.13 crore) and Kohinoor Broadcasting (75.66 lakh).
