Cardamom prices spurted by Rs 44.20, or 3 per cent, to Rs 1,516.80 per kg in futures trade today as speculators indulged in creating fresh positions, driven by pick up in spot market demand.

Restricted arrivals from the producing regions also influenced the rise in prices.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange, cardamom for August month spurted by Rs 44.20, or 3 per cent, to Rs 1,516.80 per kg with an open interest of 1,641 lots.

Similarly, the spice for delivery in September month rose by Rs 37.30, or 3 per cent, to Rs 1,280.30 per kg in 1,896 lots.

Traders said fresh positions created by speculators, supported by pick up in demand in the spot market mainly led to the rise in cardamom prices in the futures market here.
