 Remaining firm throughout the session, the Sensex crossed the 5,000-mark in early trades. After dipping below the mark in afternoon trades, the Sensex closed firmly above the 5,000-level for the first time since November 12.

 Gains in old economy stocks, specially cement, auto, metal and power contributed to the Sensex closing firmly above the 5000 mark.
