The compulsory selling of 75 per cent tea through auction system under the Tea Marketing (Control) Order (TMCO) is likely to be reintroduced soon.

The 1984 Order was revoked in December 2001. The Order was introduced to ensure that at least 75 per cent of tea processed in the country was sold through the auction system. This was done to protect small tea producers from the vagaries of payment delays or defaults, associated with private deals.
