Crude oil carrier 'Mont' which is likely to become the largest ship ever to be scrapped has reached the Alang Ship-breaking Yard, sources in the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) said here today.
The ship which arrived yesterday, is anchored few nautical miles from the ship-breaking yard, they said. GMB port officer in Alang C M Rathod said that the officials of the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and customs are examining the ship and completing the necessary formalities.
Besides, this ship would also be examined by the officials of AERB (Atomic Energy Regulatory Board) for radioactive substances, he added. Mont, was originally known as 'Knock Nevis' when it was built in 1979 in Norway.
According to Rathod this could be biggest vessel to be scrapped in Alang and looking at its size it would take nearly one year to scrape it. The ship which has a capacity of 5.65 lakh metric tonnes dead weight (DWT), a overall length of 458.45 m and a draft of 24.6 m, is valued at Rs 125 crore.
