Does the Income Tax Act stretch out to help disabled people? Ask Manish Sinh, a 40-year-old, Bombay-based chartered accountant. Sinh has been confined to a wheelchair and forced to spend heavily on medical bills. For eight years Sinh has claimed the reliefs offered by Section 80U of the Income Tax Act for people suffering from major disabilities.
Section 80U, gives him a Rs 40,000 tax break on his Rs 10 lakh per annum income. So, today his taxable income is Rs 9,60,000. Being a chartered accountant and knowing the tax laws has helped Sinh.
