The Bombay Stock Exchange's (BSE) banking stock index, Bankex, reported a record single day fall of over 9 per cent on Monday as sub-prime crisis loomed large over the Indian markets.

The other BSE sectoral indices that fell include consumer durables, realty, metal and capital goods, which have fallen by more than 6 per cent each. Power, oil and gas, healthcare, auto, IT and FMCG indices declined in the range of 3-6 per cent each.

The BSE Bankex has reported its steepest fall since May 2004. It has fallen by 9.06 per cent or 754 points as compared to a decline of 6.03 per cent in the Sensex. On May 17, 2004, the Bankex had dipped by 13.50 per cent.

Among banking stocks, Yes Bank (down 14.85 per cent), ICICI Bank (down 13.75 per cent) and Federal Bank (down 12.29 per cent) were the biggest losers.

Other banking stocks that showed considerable decline have been Allahabad Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bank of India, Axis Bank, Andhra Bank and Karnataka Bank (down 8-10 per cent)

The BSE Consumer Durables Index, however, was the biggest loser of the day. It declined by 9.69 per cent followed by the realty (7.86 per cent), metal (7.54 per cent) and capital goods (6.43 per cent).

In the consumer durables index, Rajesh Exports (16 per cent), Titan Industries (13 per cent) and Blue Star (10.3 per cent) fell over 10 per cent.

Havells India and Alstom Projects (15 per cent each), Praj Industries (12.5 per cent) and Kirloskar Brothers (12 per cent) were the top losers in the capital goods index.

CESC (11 per cent), GMR Infrastructure and Power (10 per cent), ABB (8.5 per cent), Reliance Energy (8 per cent) and Siemens (6 per cent) were major losers in the power index, while HDIL, Anant Raj Industries, Puravankara Projects, Akruti City, Ansal Infrastructure and Sobha Developers were big losers from the realty index.

BSE Mid-cap too was a major loser as it was down by 6.97 per cent.

The BSE Small-Cap was the second biggest loser on Monday, down 6.90 per cent. The BSE-500 Index also followed the general market trend and declined by 6.41 per cent.

The marketwide advance decline ratio was extremely poor at 1:9. None of the Sensex stocks and BSE-100 stocks advanced on Monday while only 11 of BSE-500 stocks advanced on Monday. |
