Breaking the range bound trend, the Sensex slipped a few points, almost touching the day's low. The Sensex is at 18,245 up 39 points and the Nifty is up nine points at 5,481.The European markets opening in the red diddn't help either. FTSE opened 0.1% down while CAC was down 0.5% and DAX shed 0.3%.In the broader market, the smallcap remained steady at 1% but the midcap index pared its gains and is at 0.7% as compared to the benchmark index at 0.2%.
Among the sectoral indices on the BSE, Consumer Durables up 1.3% leadsfolowed by Auto and Bankex.Psu has slipped into the red to accompany IT and Teck. Power and Oil & Gas too has slipped but FMCG has clawed its way up at 0.2%. Realty one of the initial gainers has pared all its gains and is at 0.03%. The movers in the Bankex space are Axis Bank up nearly 3%, HDFC Bank and IDBI Bank gaining 1.6%.
The gainers on the Sensex are Jaiprakash Associates up nearly 4% followed by Sterlite adding 3%, Tata Power, Tata Motors, HDFC Bank gaining nearly 2%.
The losers are Hero Honda down 2%, TCS and Infosys down 1% each.Reliance Communications, BHEL, Bharti Airtel and Jindal Steel are some of the other prominent losers.
Market breadth continues to be positive. Of the total 2950 stocks traded on the BSE, 1878 have advanced while 989 have declined.
