Fund managers in buy mode

The benchmark BSE 200 index last week appreciated nearly 4 per cent backed by selective buying. While the Smart Portfolios too saw appreciation in portfolio value, however, they lagged the benchmark in terms of weekly returns.

Anand Agarwal's portfolio registered the best weekly net returns of 2.2 per cent last week as against a 3.9 per cent gain in the benchmark. However, since the inception of Smart Portfolios on September 1, 2008, an investment of Rs 10 lakh in the benchmark BSE 200 index is now valued at Rs 6.36 lakh - a net loss of a whopping 36.4 per cent.

 

Last week, all the four fund managers were more focused on the buying side. Cumulatively in the 16 trades executed by them, they bought shares of worth Rs 2.56 lakh and sold stocks worth nearly Rs 50,000 translating to net purchases worth Rs 2.06 lakh. Most aggressive among them, was Anand Agarwal who made net purchases of Rs 1.35 lakh. Sadanand Shetty with a mix of buy and sell was the only fund manager to have sold shares last week.

Kashyap Pujara executed just a single trade last week, in which he averaged his holdings in Reliance Communications. Despite the averaging, his net return on investment in Reliance Communications is a negative 32.6 per cent. Pujara's net worth now stands at Rs 8.69 lakh, with Rs 5.65 lakh cash.

Sadanand Shetty executed nine trades of which five were on the buy side. He purchased stocks worth Rs 72,240 and sold stocks worth Rs 49,758. Shetty sold his investments in Power Finance Corporation and Sun Pharma earning profits of 4.7 per cent and 7.2 per cent, respectively.

He bought Balrampur Chini, Nicholas Piramal and Crisil. Heavyweights, Reliance Industries and State Bank of India are the top two stocks in his portfolio. At the end of the week, Shetty's net worth stands at Rs 9.16 lakh, with a cash component of 70.6 per cent or Rs 6.47 lakh and total investments worth Rs 2.69 lakh.

Anand Agarwal bought shares worth Rs 1.35 lakh. He added Axis Bank, Balrampur Chini, HDIL and Texamaco to his portfolio. Interestingly, Agarwal’s top three picks - Axis Bank, HDIL and Jet Airways more or less have an equal weightage of around 5 per cent each in his portfolio. He has invested around Rs 42,000 to Rs 44,000 in each of these stocks. As of now, all his holdings are in the green, with Texamaco up over 19 per cent from his purchase price, and HDIL up 12 per cent. Agarwal's net worth now stands at Rs 8.65 lakh with Rs 6.36 lakh of cash.
