In an otherwise quiet week for the markets, Smart Portfolios fund managers were busy building their portfolios ahead of the quarterly and full year earnings next month. The four fund managers cumulatively executed 47 trades, of which 24 were on the buy side. Barring Phani Sekhar who executed a single sell trade, others were net buyers of stocks last week. Amar Ambani and Vinay Khattar were the more aggressive buyers with net cash outflows of around Rs 1.20 lakh each, while Ajay Parmar bought shares worth Rs 19,000.
The Smart Portfolios benchmark value now stands at Rs 11.23 lakh, up 12.31 per cent since its inception on September 1, 2009. Ajay Parmar and Amar Ambani continue to beat the benchmark by a wide margin with gains of 30.72 and 29.65 per cent, respectively, at Rs 13.07 lakh and Rs 12.96 lakh each. Phani Sekhar, who joined a fortnight later, and Vinay Khattar, who replaced Praveen Panjwani, have logged 11.61 per cent and 11.76 per cent gains each at Rs 11.16 lakh and Rs 11.18 lakh, respectively.

Phani Sekhar executed a single trade, through which he exited from Mindtree for a gain of 13.5 per cent. Following this his cash levels rose to Rs 63,000 from Rs 2,000 earlier. Sekhar now holds 14 stocks in his portfolio. eClerx up nearly 55 per cent from his cost price is the top performer followed by Axis Bank and Esab India. Reliance Infrastructure with a loss of 15 per cent is the major laggard followed by Bharti Airtel and 3i InfoTech. His net worth declined by marginal 0.09 per cent in the week under review.

Vinay Khattar executed 21 trades last week, of which 11 were on the buy side. His gross purchases amounted to Rs 4.12 lakh, while gross sales stood at Rs 2.98 lakh. Prominent buys included - eClerx, McNally Bharat, Sabero Organics, Sintex, Fortis Healthcare and Sesa Goa. He sold shares of Pantaloon, Jubilant Organosys, Techno Electric and Mahindra & Mahindra. Khattar now holds 16 stocks in his portfolio, of which six are trading below his cost price. Jubilant Foodworks, Aries Agro and McNally Bharat are the top performers, while Crew B.O.S. Products and Bombay Rayon are the prominent losers. His portfolio value appreciated by 1.18 per cent and he now holds cash of Rs 4,000.
