In order to prevent spread of diseases among animals, the Centre has decided to restrict import of animals without valid licences.
Importers will be allowed to bring in animals or birds, whether as pets or otherwise only after they obtain a valid import licence from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) containing veterinary and sanitary conditions. This has to be followed by clearance, obtained from the Animal Quarantine Authorities, an official statement said.
Animals such as exotic breeds of dogs are being brought into the country, to be sold as pets, without proper vaccination, the statement said.
